President Bola Tinubu has extolled former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s lasting impact on Nigeria’s governance and national discourse, describing him as a statesman whose interventions have helped shape public policy and hold leadership accountable.
In a tribute marking Obasanjo’s 88th birthday on Wednesday, President Tinubu commended the former leader’s decades of service, from his military career to his tenure as both military and civilian head of state.
Reflecting on Obasanjo’s role in Nigeria’s history, Tinubu noted how fate had placed him at critical junctures—from receiving the instrument of surrender at the end of the Civil War in 1970 to overseeing the transition to civilian rule in 1979.
Two decades later, he returned as a democratically elected president in 1999, spearheading reforms that laid the foundation for Nigeria’s modern democratic governance.
“Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership,” Tinubu stated.
Beyond Nigeria, the President highlighted Obasanjo’s global influence as a respected diplomat, peacemaker, and advocate for good governance across Africa.
His roles within the African Union, United Nations, and other international institutions have solidified his standing as a key figure in diplomacy and conflict resolution.
“Out of office, only a few will deny that the former president continues to wield considerable influence among the political elite at home and remains well-regarded abroad as an ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter,” he added.
Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s commitment to national unity, peace, and progress, acknowledging his contributions to shaping Nigeria’s trajectory.
“At 88, the former president remains a force to reckon with. I pray that God Almighty grants him more years of strength and wisdom so that Nigeria and Africa can continue to benefit from his wealth of experience,” Tinubu said.
On behalf of the government and the Nigerian people, Tinubu extended heartfelt congratulations to Obasanjo, recognizing his enduring legacy and wishing him continued good health.
