Tinubu Appoints AIG Tunde Disu, New IGP
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, to replace Kayode Egbetokun who was relieved of his job on Tuesday following what insiders described as a move to reinvigorate the Nigeria Police Force.
Sources familiar with the development confirmed the change on Tuesday, describing it as a major shift in the nation’s security architecture and signalling the commencement of a new leadership phase at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Although an official statement from the Presidency was still being awaited as of press time, senior officers within the police high command disclosed that the transition process had already commenced.
Before his appointment, Disu held several strategic roles within the police hierarchy, including serving as the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and heading the elite Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he earned recognition for intelligence-driven policing and operational effectiveness.
The leadership change comes at a time when the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to confront security challenges across the country, including kidnapping, banditry, and organised criminal activities.
Before his appointment as IGP, Egbetokun served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.
He succeeded Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure expired in September 2023 after an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
