The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that it impounded 1,279 commercial motor vehicles in the third quarter of this year in Lagos for failing to install the speet limit device.
This disclosure was made by the Corps’ Lagos State Sector Commander, Hyginus Omeje, in a media parley with Journalists.
The event was part of the organisation’s plan to prepare Nigerians for safe trips while plying the roads during the ‘ember’ months.
Giving the breakdown, Omeje said that a total of 6,007 commercial vehicles drivers were flagged down on the road during the FRSC officials operations; however, only 1,993 were found to have speed limit device in their vehicles.
On the other hand, he said, 4,014 commercial vehicles had no speed limit device while 3,822 were booked.
The FRSC boss disclosed that about 192 commercial vehicle drivers were cautioned while seven were prosecuted for failing to install the speed limit device.
According to him, a total of 57 road traffic accidents was recorded in the Lagos Sector Command in the third quarter of this year compared to 106 in the corresponding period of last year representing a drop of 4.6 per cent.
Omeje further disclosed that 14 people died in the third quarter of 2017 compared to 45 people the corresponding period of 2016, while 93 were injured as against 221 in 2016.
He also said that while 842 people were involved in various cases of road accidents in 2016 third quarter in Lagos, 392 people were involved in the nine months of 2017.
