The Nigerian Senate has launched an investigation into what it describes as selective enforcement of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police personnel from VIPs.
Raising the matter under Order 9 on the Senate floor, Senator Abdul Ningi expressed concern over reports that, while police orderlies were removed from lawmakers, numerous businessmen, celebrities, influencers, and even their children continue to enjoy the protection of armed escorts.
Presiding over the session, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin assured lawmakers that the Senate leadership is already in consultation with relevant authorities to address the growing concern.
Following deliberations, the Senate directed its Committee on Police Affairs to probe the alleged selective compliance with the presidential directive and submit a report within four weeks.
The move underscores the upper chamber’s determination to ensure equity in the implementation of security directives and curb perceived preferential treatment in the deployment of state security resources.
