After South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) formally asked President Jacob Zuma to resign for the sake of the country, plans are afoot to replace him with the new party leader who emerged from a recent national congress of the party, Cyril Ramaphosa.
According to the ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, “It is obvious we want Comrade Ramaphosa to come in as the president of South Africa,” after the party top leadership decided to ‘recal’ the scandal -hit President Zuma. He said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decided the removal should be “treated with urgency”.
“The NEC has noted South Africa is going through a period of uncertainty and anxiety as a result of unresolved matter of transition,” he said.
Zuma is yet to react formally, but there are expectations that he would do so on Wednesday to douse mounting tension in the country over the division his corruption allegation and probe has caused.
