The leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Wednesday when supporters loyal to two National Secretaries, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, clashed at the 79th meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja.
Okoye and Anyanwu are currently in a legal brawl over the position of the PDP National Secretary.
The south-east chapter of the PDP, had nominated Ude-Okoye as National Secretary to replace Anyanwu after he emerged the party’s governorship candidate in Imo State.
The Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, had on December 20, 2024, affirmed the nomination of Ude-Okoye, as replacement for Anyanwu.
But Anyanwu resumed office as National Secretary after he filed a stay of execution and an appeal before the Supreme Court.
Crisis, however, escalated on Wednesday, as both Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye appeared for the BoT Meeting of the party.
Shortly after the first phase of the meeting, one Emma, loyal to Anyanwu, approached Okoye, asking him to vacate his seat. He reportedly slapped Okoye, a situation that angered Okoye, who went back to mobilise his men.
It took the intervention of policemen on the ground to calm frayed nerves.
