The decision was taken on Thursday during the Assembly’s resumed sitting in Port Harcourt, after a motion to halt the impeachment process was moved and unanimously adopted.
The suspension comes barely a week after President Bola Tinubu stepped in to ease tensions arising from the renewed political crisis in the state involving Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Recall that the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers Assembly had, in January, issued a notice of impeachment against the governor and his deputy, accusing them of gross misconduct.
The allegations included the demolition of the state assembly complex and the alleged expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, among other claims.
However, Thursday’s resolution to suspend the process is widely viewed as a confidence-building measure aimed at restoring calm and creating room for dialogue among the contending political actors, in line with the president’s call for peace and stability in Rivers State.
