Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti have reached terms regarding his exit from the Spanish giants. The 65-year-old Italian manager is now expected to take over as Brazil national team head coach on a contract running until the 2026 World Cup.
The formal announcement of his departure might occur following this Sunday’s match against Barcelona.
Discussions between Ancelotti and Madrid officials centred primarily on financial arrangements for the remaining year of his contract, which had been extended until 2026 in December 2023.
With verbal agreements now in place, the club must determine who will guide the team at the upcoming Club World Cup. Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen remains the frontrunner for external candidates.
The Brazilian Football Confederation has pursued Ancelotti since March, describing him as “the president’s dream” appointment.
His move to Brazil had temporarily stalled pending a resolution with Madrid, but he should now be available for June’s World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay.
Alternative options for Ancelotti had included positions with Saudi Arabian clubs or a non-coaching role at Madrid.
During his second tenure at Madrid beginning in 2021, Ancelotti collected two La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies.
His total of 15 titles makes him the most successful manager in club history, an achievement Madrid wishes to honour appropriately in his farewell. The club faces challenges this season after UCL’s elimination by Arsenal and Copa del Rey’s final defeat to Barcelona.
Madrid currently trails Barca by four points in La Liga with four matches remaining this season.
The final Clasico between these rivals takes place this Sunday, potentially marking Ancelotti’s last major fixture before he transitioned to international management. Madrid officials hope to complete all formalities before the conclusion of their league campaign.
