Rising from a meeting with the National Working Committee, NWC, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Wednesday, governors elected on the platform of the party have decried the insinuation that President Muhammadu Buhari could not attend and preside over the meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, because of ill health.
They said it was not compulsory he presides over FEC meetings as along as Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was constitutional mandated to fill that vacancy when the need arises.
Penultimate week, Vice-President Osinbajo on the prompting of the Secretary to the Federal Government, Babachir Lawal had presided over the FEC meeting after the President failed to show up, fueling fresh speculation on his health. Last week, the meeting did not hold at all. This week’s was again presided over by Osinbajo.
Mr. Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture told State House Correspondent at the end of Wednesday meeting that the President “asked that he should be allowed to rest and the vice president should preside. He asked the Vice President to preside over today’s meeting.
“In addition, he also asked that all his files be taken home to him and he will be working from home today .”
Last week meeting that failed to hold was because Ministers were yet to return to their national assignment desks from Easter holidays, according to Mohammed
Governor Nasir el- Rufai of Kaduna state, who spoke with journalists in Abuja at the end of the governors meeting with party NWC, said Nigerians should not fret over the matter, adding that the governors themselves were the least worried.
“We are not worried yet and have no reason to be worried, but we however, urge Nigerians to continue to pray for the president to be in good health,” he said.
“Even me that is 57 years old, I still go for medical check-up.”
