The Police Command in Kwara State has confirmed that at least 75 persons were killed following a deadly attack on communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this on Friday, February 6, 2026, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. She described the incident as a “dastardly act” and confirmed the casualties recorded so far.
“The present toll of casualties that we have from that dastardly act that happened on the 3rd of February at about 17:30 hours is 75. Investigations are still ongoing, and we will continue to update members of the public as necessary,” she said.
She explained that the response was challenged by the remote location of the attack, noting that the affected areas are about a two-hour drive from the divisional headquarters in Kaiama.
She admitted that officers initially on the ground may have been overwhelmed by the scale of the attack.
“At that moment, I believe they were probably overwhelmed. Because of the distance from the community to the divisional headquarters, it took time before reinforcements arrived, but definitely, reinforcements came,” she said.
Ejire-Adeyemi also revealed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate reinforcement of security in the area through the deployment of tactical, operational, and intelligence assets.
This follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for an army battalion to spearhead “Operation Savannah Shield” in the region to checkmate further terrorist activity.
Gunmen had on Tuesday stormed Woro and neighboring Nuku communities in Kaiama, killing residents, burning shops, and razing the residence of a traditional ruler.
Local sources and lawmakers have suggested the death toll could be significantly higher than the 75 deaths officially confirmed by the police so far.
