The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that a series of suspected suicide bombings in Maiduguri last night resulted in the tragic loss of life and numerous injuries.
According to a press release issued by ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso the command, the attacks occurred around 7:24 PM on March 16, targeting three key locations within the city.
The bombings took place at the Maiduguri Monday Market, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), and the Post Office Flyover area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosions were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.
As a result of these attacks, 23 innocent lives were lost, and 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Emergency responders, including medical teams from NEMA and SEMA, swiftly evacuated the victims to medical facilities where they are currently receiving treatment.
In response, security forces—including police tactical units, the military, and other joint security agencies—moved quickly to secure the affected sites.
The scenes were cordoned off and subjected to thorough clearance operations by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Maiduguri, to ensure no further threats remain.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, paid an on-the-spot visit to the affected areas, overseeing the ongoing response efforts.
