Mr. Tony Okechuwu Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission and Ms. Queen Janet, PRO Initiative for Disability Inclusion and Diversity at the occasion.
The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr. Tony Okechuwu Ojukwu, has called on the Nigerian Government and concerned stakeholders to ensure that persons with disabilities are adequately included in all areas of recovery and rebuilding efforts from COVID-19 devastation.
While speaking at a joint news briefing to mark the 2020 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the executive secretary NHRC, represented by Mr. Harry Oguwuche Obe, Director women, children & vulnerable groups department, NHRC, said persons with disabilities required well thought out special protective measures in the area of health care and other specific needs, with the aim of helping them get over their many vulnerabilities.
Furthermore, Mr. Oguwuche noted that the National Human Rights Commission as a way of contributing it’s quota to help disabled persons, has a dedicated department for women, children and other vulnerable groups, which aims at sustaining focus of PWDs issues, as high profile subject of interest to ensure a disability- inclusive, accessible and sustainable disability friendly post COVID-19 society.
Also speaking at the meeting, Ms. Queen Janet, PRO Initiative for Disability Inclusion and Diversity (INCLUD), while thanking the Federal Government and relevant individuals for their support towards persons with disabilities, called for further assistance by the government to take appropriate measures inclusive of accessible to public works, disability inclusive proposed post COVID-19 housing programme, allocation of farmlands to persons with disabilities in all the states for Mass agricultural programme, so as to help enable persons with disabilities.
