The Edo State Government has suspended the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo Central Senatorial District for the second term academic session, following worsening security conditions in the area.
The suspension comes in the wake of a violent protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, triggered by rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity. The protest, which occurred last week, left several persons injured and resulted in the vandalisation of the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness Zaiki Anthony Ehizojie Abumere II. Shops were also looted, while commercial activities were brought to a standstill in parts of the town.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, announced that the suspension of school resumption would remain in force until further notice.
Iyamu said the decision, approved by Governor Monday Okpebholo, was taken to address prevailing exigencies and to prioritise the safety and welfare of pupils, students, teachers, and other education stakeholders in the district.
“The new date of resumption will be duly communicated to the public in due course,” the commissioner stated.
He urged parents, guardians, school proprietors, and other stakeholders in Edo Central Senatorial District to take note of the development and comply accordingly.
The Edo State Government has reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and strengthening security across the affected communities, assuring residents that measures are being intensified to curb kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area.
