Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has increased the minimum wage for workers in the State from N40,000 to N70,000.
The governor made the announcement, Monday at the commissioning of the newly built ultra-modern Labour House (secretariat complex) for labour unions in the State, in Benin City. The labour house is named after his predecessor, Comrade Adam Oshiomhole, currently a Senator representing Edo North in the National Assemble.
According to Obaseki, the new minimum wage regime will come into effect as from May 1, 2024, during this year’s Workers’ Day.
Edo state has been paying N40,000 as minimum wage, N10,000 more than the National Minimum Wage of N30,000. Infact, Edo state is the only state in the country that pays it’s worker more than the minimum wage, which it has sustained by this new increase.
This is the second time that Governor Obaseki has increased minimum wage in the state.
The first time was about 2021 when he raised the wage from N30,000 to N40,000.
