The sixteen days rally that the key market indicators of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) had been enjoying came to a halt on Friday July 28, 2017, as a result of losses that was recorded in medium and large capitalized stocks like Dangote Cement Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc FBN Holding Plc among others.
At the close of business, the All Share Index (NSE ASI) and the Market Capitalization decreased by 1.02 percent, bringing the year to date return to 37.17 percent. The All Share Index closed at 36,864.71 against the previous close of 37,245.17 while Market Capitalization closed at ₦12.705 trillion against previous close of ₦12.837 trillion.
The market, which witnessed influx of second quarter results, shows that volume traded decreased by 3.17 percent from 542.804 million to 525.596 million, while the total value of stock traded increased by 1.61 percent from ₦8.009 billion to ₦8.138 billion in 5,799 deals.
The Financial Services sector led the activity chart with 417.58 million shares exchanged for ₦4.657 billion. Conglomerates came next with 58.461 million shares traded for ₦0.092 billion, Consumer Goods, Oil And Gas, Industrial Goods sectors followed in that order on the activity chart.
FBN Holding Plc, Diamond Bank Plc, Transnational Corporation Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc were the most active stocks by volume. Dangote Sugar Plc, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Custodian & Allied Insurance Plc, Unity Bank Plc and Air Services Plc emerged the highest price gainers.
Cadbury Nigeria Plc, Chellaram Plc, Cement Company of Northern Nigerian Plc, Livestock Feeds Plc and AXA Mansard topped the loser’s table. In all a total of 102 companies shares were traded, with 30 gainers and 28 losers while 44 stocks prices remained unchanged.
