Northern Governors Forum on Monday held a meeting in Kaduna with the President of the Senate Ahmed Lawan, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ovie Omon- Agege, the Inspector General Police, Mohammed Adamu, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, traditional rulers, with a commitment to restore confidence in the police in the wake of the #endSARS protest and uphold the unity of the country.
The meeting which came on the aftermath of #endSARS protest that witnessed wanton looting and destruction of private and public properties across many states of the country took a hard look on the protests and urged the youths to stop further action.
Chairman of the Forum and governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong who read the decision of the meeting said that after an extensive deliberation, the meeting agreed to appreciate the role of traditional rulers in the region in containing the spread of the protest and called for a constitutional role for them.
According to him, the meeting condemned the protest which they believed was sponsored by divisive persons and endorsed the indissolubility of the country while calling called for some form of censorship and control of social media.
Expatiating on the outcome of the meeting in a briefing with journalists, host and Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasri el-Rufai stated that the stakeholders to support the ideas for police reform, adding that, “We believe that what is needed now is to restore confidence to the police and give them more equipment and better training to do their work better”
He emphasized the need for collaboration between governments to enhance “community policing as a transitional stage to state policing when the Constitution is amended”
