Oyo State Ministry of Health has confirmed that there are no clinical diagnose cases of meningitis in Oyo state as reported in some national dailies
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan disclosed this in a press briefing at the conference room of the state ministry of health
The news on the outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis in the northern part of Nigeria has raised a course for concern to all stakeholders in the health sector
With suspected cases in Oyo state, it became imperative to clear the air on the actual status of the state
In his address at a press briefing, Dr. Adeduntan reassured the people that earlier news carried by the media should be disregarded as no confirmed case of meningitis has been recorded in the state at the moment
The commissioner reiterated the commitment of the state government towards ensuring a disease free Oyo state while noting that the state has put up facilities on high alert with the deployment of confirmatory resources as well as man power to all facilities, in-case of possible outbreak
The state ministry of health also implored the general public to uphold high hygienic practices, avoid overcrowding and sleep in well ventilated places, ensure proper disposal of respiratory and throat secretions, reducing of hand shakes and kissing, sharing of utensils while ensuring that any sick individual visits the hospital
“Cerebrospinal meningitis is an acute bacterial illness which is highly contagious, the bacteria can be transmitted from person to person through droplets of respiratory or throat secretion from infected person. The disease is usually associated with sudden high fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and confusion”, he said.
