The Nigerian Postal Service has announced that all postal items sent from Nigeria to the United States, except letters and documents, will now attract a prepaid customs duty of $80 at the point of acceptance.
The new levy, which took effect on August 29, 2025, is in compliance with an Executive Order issued by the U.S. Government suspending duty-free exemptions for all countries under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
In a statement on Friday, NIPOST explained that the directive affects postal administrations globally and not just Nigeria.
It also warned that stricter measures by airlines and cargo carriers on U.S.-bound shipments could cause longer transit and processing times, leading to possible delivery delays.
The agency disclosed that it is engaging with the Universal Postal Union, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and airline partners to minimise disruptions.
