The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has been given the go ahead to remove all wrecks littering the waterways in Nigeria.
The agreement was reached in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, and National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA.
Director General of NIMASA, Bashir Jimoh, said the three agencies have powers to remove wrecks from the nation’s waterways.
Mr Jimoh explained that section 32 of the NIMASA act gives the agency powers to remove wrecks from Nigerian territorial waters, adding that section 9 of NIWA act and section 7 of NPA act gives the two agencies similar powers on wreck removal.
He said the Managing Director of NPA had agreed that NIMASA should go ahead and remove wrecks from the nation’s territorial waterways
