Nigeria’s attempt to overturn their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has failed after the sport’s governing body rejected the country’s formal complaint against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Nigeria Football Federation had challenged the result of the intercontinental playoff final held on 16 November in Rabat, Morocco, which ended 1–1 before DR Congo prevailed 4–3 on penalties.
The Nigerian federation alleged that certain DR Congo players were ineligible to participate, citing potential breaches of competition regulations. FIFA conducted a detailed examination of the case, requiring both associations to submit player registration documents, nationality records, and related correspondence.
The adjudicatory body found that all players were properly registered and cleared under FIFA statutes and CAF competition rules. The ruling maintains the original result and confirms DR Congo’s place in the qualification process. FIFA stated that eligibility matters are assessed solely on verified documentation and that no violations were identified.
The decision is considered final, with no further appeal anticipated. The outcome has deepened frustration among Nigerian supporters and officials following a challenging qualification campaign.
FIFA reiterated its adherence to strict procedural standards in handling eligibility complaints. DR Congo will now continue their World Cup preparations, whilst Nigeria begins a period of reassessment ahead of the next international cycle as they focus on their Africa Cup of Nations fixtures.
