Nigeria has launched a new Livestock Development Policy aimed at improving feed systems and boosting productivity in the livestock sector.
The policy was unveiled by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Global Forum for Animal Feed and Feed Regulators in Rome.
Maiha said the initiative focuses on enhancing feed quality and strengthening supply chains to increase productivity, improve animal health, and expand access to protein-rich foods needed to combat malnutrition.
“The government aims to enhance feed quality and supply chains to boost productivity, improve animal health, and increase the availability of protein-rich foods, which are critical to tackling malnutrition,” he said.
According to the minister, the reforms will also raise farmers’ incomes and promote innovation in the agribusiness sector.
“Sustainable feed production will catalyse economic transformation, calling for closer collaboration among farmers, feed producers, processors, and private investors,” he added.
Maiha emphasised the importance of technology adoption in driving growth across the livestock value chain.
“The adoption of modern technology in feed production and livestock management will improve efficiency, reduce waste, and make Nigeria’s livestock industry more competitive across Africa,” he explained.
He said the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to strengthen food security, create jobs, reduce poverty, and foster rural development through livestock-driven growth.
