The national grid system, operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, suffered disruption on Wednesday, marking the 13th disruption since 2024.
It is the first grid failure in 2025 following a line-tripping incident in January. Though it resulted in blackouts in many parts of the country, officials said Wednesday’ s occurrence was no groid collapse. In an X platform message they said
“There was a “GRID DISTURBANCE” before noon today.“Parts of the country experienced outage.“Further information shortly,” the updated statement read.
However, data obtained from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), said the system disturbance occurred at about 11:34 am.
Data from the National Control Centre revealed that power generation stood at 4,064 megawatts, but by noon, it had plummeted to 1,203MW before completely collapsing to 0.00MW by 1 p.m.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the development in separate messages to their customers.
“Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 12th February 2025 at 11:34hrs affecting all our feeders.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” IKEDC said.
On its part, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, wrote, “Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
“While the gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”
