Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed concern over the shortage of teachers across the country, calling for urgent recruitment and greater investment in the teaching profession.
Mrs Tinubu spoke on Sunday in a message to mark the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, themed “Focusing on the Global Teacher Shortage”.
The First Lady, who described teaching as one of society’s noblest callings that deserves more recognition and support, stressed the need for improved welfare and professional development opportunities for teachers as a means of attracting and retaining qualified educators.
“The shortage of teachers is a challenge we must confront with urgency by empowering educators, investing in their growth, and inspiring more to join this noble profession”, she said.
Describing teachers as “true heroes” of the nation, Mrs Tinubu commended their dedication to shaping young minds and guiding future generations.
“As a lifelong teacher myself, I salute you all on this special day. Teachers are true heroes, shaping minds, nurturing dreams, and guiding generations. Happy World Teachers’ Day 2025”, she said.
The First Lady’s message comes amid growing concerns over inadequate staffing in schools and the need to strengthen Nigeria’s education system through sustained government support and public-private partnerships.
