In a rowdy reaction to the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day by President Muhammad Buhari, many members in the House of Representatives set the chambers into a confused place took by taking positions for and against the declaration while the Senate tasked the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, to announce the results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. The Senate made the request on Thursday during plenary.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Wednesday declared June 12 to replace May 29 as Democracy Day, in honour of late MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the election.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the national award committee, Justice Alfa Belgore, former Chief Justice of the Federation, has reportedly faulted the award of the highest honour of GCFR to Abiola on the grounds that it cannot be awarded posthumously.
Belgore, who was CJN from 2006 to 2007, said the national honours cannot be awarded posthumously, let alone the GCFR, which is the highest honour in the land.
