Hundreds of farmers and their families in Osun State face imminent hunger and starvation following a one-week quit notice issued by the government to vacate their farms by April 21, 2017.
The affected land is in Ile-Ife Shasha Forest Reserve 2 which is about 30 square miles, where hundreds of farmers have been planting various crops such as cocoa, palm trees, kolanut and yam for the past ten years, starting from the administration of Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola who was said to have acquiesced to the request of Oba Sijuwade Olubuse II, the late Ooni of Ife, to allot the land to the farmers.
According to yet to be independently confirmed information, the government is said to have issued the quit notice because the land was not properly acquired and there is no gazette on it by the appropriate authority. Details later…
