Following the agreement reached with the federal government on Monday night, Organised Labour has suspended their strike for five days, to enable further consultation on the way forward.
The TUC president Festus Osifo said this on Tuesday in Abuja said that Labour leaders had a successful meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, and other government officials on Monday and reached a resolution that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was committed to a new minimum wage higher than N60,000.
Today at a meeting with FG Tripartite Committee scheduled by 10 a.m, Labour suspended its strike.
The strike suspension to allow uninterrupted meetings with the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage. Recall that the SGF, George Akume promised that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to paying higher than N60,000 as the minimum wage.
He also assured that no worker would face repercussions for participating in the strike and that the tripartite committee would convene daily for the next week to finalize the new minimum wage.
Part of the contents of the agreement, states that ” after exhaustive deliberation and engagement by both parties, the following resolutions were reached:
1. The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000;
II. Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet everyday for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage;
“With this development, every government and private offices are expected to reopen and function as usual.
Those at the meeting who signed the agreement are, for the Federal Government of Nigeria:
1. Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation; Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment
For the Organised Labour:
1. Joe Ajaero, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)
