Irate Protestors Set Benue Council Secretariat, Monarch, Senator’s Houses Ablaze

Angry youths from the Gwer West local Government area were said to have set ablaze a house belonging to a senator representing Benue North West, Titus Zam, and the palace of a second-class traditional ruler, the Ter Nagi, HRH, Chief Daniel Abomtse.

Also allegedly set on fire were the Gwer West Council Secretariat, and the house of former Commissioner for Works in Benue State, Engr Felix Atume and former Majority Leader in the Benue House of assembly, Hon. Cheme, among others.

The irate youths were angry over the persistent attack and killing of residents by invading herdsmen in the past.

Three Civil Protection Guard Officers were killed by the marauding herdsmen at On-Mba-Aondo, Tsambe-Mbesev ward in Gwer West local Government area in Benue state.

Following the development, sources said a member representing Gwer/Gwer West in the Federal House of Representatives had earlier issued a statement, directing youths in the area to henceforth carry such death bodies and dump them at the council secretariat.

It was further alleged that following the attack, bodies were taken to the secretariat on Monday, and they later went berserk, allegedly burning some houses of prominent sons of the area.

When our Correspondent visited the area, a source confirmed that corpses were dumped but later evacuated.

In a post, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Command, ACP Sewuese Anene, said, “information has been received about an ongoing protest in Naka and the Commissioner of  Police moved this morning to the area with other tactical teams.

“Further development will be communicated to you, please.”

In his reaction, Governor Hyacinth Alia, who could not hold himself over the vicious and ferocious attack and murder of officers, stated that the inhuman act, carried out by marauding armed herdsmen, is once more a flagrant affront to the peace and security of our communities.
He said, ” We appreciate the deep rage and frustration that has led to the anxiety at Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West, including the regrettable burning of the Local Government Secretariat and the palace of Ter Nagi by protesters.”
While empathising with the people, the governor advocated restraint and foresight in fuelling the anger, noting that “destruction of our own worth simply serves to frustrate the intentions of the government, which is devoted to building up peace and security in the state.”
Governor Alia, therefore, charged all security organs to intensify their efforts in detecting and capturing the perpetrators of this heinous atrocity, emphasising that it is essential that these marauding herdsmen face the full wrath of the law.
In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, quotes the governor as saying that the security of residents is paramount, as the government will not rest until those culpable for the violence are held liable.
He emphasised that his government is faithfully pursuing to enhance security efforts and protect communities from further attacks.
“We implore all citizens to stand vigilant and collaborate with security agencies in reporting unusual activities. In these trying moments, let us stand together against violence and endeavor for peace and justice in Benue State”, the governor stated.
He expressed the hope that together, the state can conquer these challenges and establish a healthier environment for all.
