The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the disciplinary trial and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman over the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine “Mene” Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, after authorities confirmed the officer violated Force Order 237 and established operational procedures governing the use of firearms.
Ogidi, described by family members and associates as an upcoming music artiste, was allegedly shot dead during a police operation after reportedly going to pick up a waybill on behalf of another person at Sapele.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has sparked outrage across Delta State and on social media, with growing calls for a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the police team involved in the operation.
According to separate statements issued on Tuesday by the Delta State Police Command and Force Headquarters, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to intelligence from members of the public concerning a suspect allegedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police authorities stated that while efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the operation, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of Ogidi.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the killing in strong terms, describing the officer’s conduct as unlawful, unprofessional and contrary to the rules of engagement of the Nigeria Police Force.
The CP immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and directed his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba before his subsequent movement to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary proceedings.
Police authorities confirmed that the officer has already been queried and transferred alongside members of his team to Abuja, where they are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee currently in session for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.
The incident gained wider public attention after a video circulated online showing the deceased allegedly mentioning an individual in Sapele whom he claimed should have been investigated in connection with the parcel.
Family members insist Ogidi was merely sent to collect the package and was not given an opportunity to explain himself or face proper investigation before he was shot.
A relative of the deceased, who spoke publicly on the matter, said he had personally contacted the victim’s elder brother and sister and assured the family that the matter would be pursued thoroughly to ensure justice.
The relative further alleged that ASP Nuhu Usman did not act alone during the operation and claimed there were indications that other officers connected to the incident were being shielded from investigation.
The allegations have intensified public demands for a broader probe beyond the officer who pulled the trigger.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, the Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law.
“The Command further reaffirms its zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct”, the statement noted.
Force Headquarters also confirmed the disciplinary action in a separate statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, stating that preliminary findings established that the officer acted in clear violation of police operational regulations.
The statement added that the Inspector-General of Police had directed immediate disciplinary proceedings and prosecution of the officer while assuring the family of the deceased that justice would be served in accordance with the law.
“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust”, the statement added.
The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the disciplinary and legal processes continue.
The killing has reignited concerns over police brutality, abuse of authority and alleged extrajudicial actions by some operatives despite repeated assurances by the police hierarchy that erring officers would be sanctioned.
Civil society organisations, youth groups and residents in Delta State have continued to call for transparent prosecution of all officers involved in the incident and renewed reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and protecting citizens’ rights during law enforcement operations.
