The South west Zonal Coordinator of the Agency, Yakubu Suleiman, stated this in Wednesdayduring the on-the-spot assessment tour by the agency, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital .
Yakubu Suleiman promised that the agency would intervene in the plight of victims of flood disaster and cautioned people to stop building structures on waterways.
On his part,the Oyo State Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, who stood in for Governor Ajimobi directed that all structures along waterways be demolished.
The NEMA and the state government teams visited Orogun, Olodo,Ojoo and other areas of Ibadan.
Meanwhile, the government has warned residents to adhere strictly to environmental and physical planning regulations aimed at averting flood disasters in the state.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday at the Governor’s Office, the State Commissioner Environment and Water Resources, Chief Isaac Ishola, said the little damages recorded was as a result the residents’ actions.
Ishola stated that the ministry had visited seven places across the metropolis but was happy the no lives were loss.
He stated that residents still dump refuse in drainages and build houses around water ways, in spite of the several warnings from government.
He stated that 14 rivers were also identified for expansion out of which four have been awarded and the remaining 10 at the stage of design.
Ishola stated that government would continue to take proactive measures, urging the people to adhere strictly to the laws.
