Shortly after he joined President Muhammadu Buhari and others for Juma’at prayers at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Friday, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State had a brief encounter with state correspondents and told them that he had no regret, no apologies for the September 22, 2016 memo he wrote to the President. He also brushed aside any suggestion that his recent battle with the National Assembly members over emoluments was ill motivated.
Immediately after the prayers he stepped outside into the waiting crowd of reporters. He however fingered persons from the villa as those behind the leak and said he would write another if the need arose.
He said, “I am disappointed that a private communication to the highest office in the land can be leaked and it was leaked from the villa. I am told by those that published it, but this is a fact of life.
“We live in an age where anything you write or say can be leaked. It is ok, my intentions are clear, I have no ill motive but I wanted to communicate with the President what many Nigerians are talking about and what steps can be taken to improve governance of the country and move the country forward.
“That was my motive and if tomorrow, like I said, I see anything that the President needs to know I will discuss with him and I will articulate and put it into writing and on the record for him to have a reminder document to work on
” I have no regrets and I have no apologies.”
He however said that the new appointments being made by the government reflected his concern for the engagement of competent and resourceful personnel in government. On the recent tiff between him and the National Assembly over allegations of wasteful spending, which warranted him to publish his salaries and challenged the lawmakers to do the same, he said he had no ill motive but patriotism in his stand.
The memo titled “Immediate and medium-term imperatives for President Muhammadu Buhari,” detailed the wasted two years of policy somersault of the administration and the incompetence of most principal officers of the President and suggested fiscal and socio-economic remedied to redeem the party’s battered image with the public
