Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has said the marauding herdsmen are more dangerous than Boko Haram insurgents.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, Ajimobi the stated this while hosting the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge Southwest Zone, DIG Foluso Adebanjo, who paid a courtesy visit to the state on Thursday.
While thanking the police and other security agencies for their efforts in the past, the governor urged them to collaborate with a view to finding a lasting solution to the herdsmen’s attacks.
Stating that the earlier the menace was solved the better it would be for the country, he told the police chief that the government’s first priority is the security of lives and property.
He lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his interest in shoring up staff strength of the police.
“We are ready to cooperate with the police”, he reiterated.
Responding, the DIG, accompanied by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Agoola Oshodi-Glover; Oyo State Commissioner, Abiodun Odude and other officers, disclosed that the purpose of the visit was to have an on-the-spot assessment of the state of crime and provide solutions to security challenges as directed by the Inspector General of Police.
He said he had visited Lagos and Ogun States for the same purpose and reiterated the commitment of the police to continue to discharge its responsibility.
He however added that the task of policing is a joint responsibility.
According the police boss: “Everybody has a duty to have a peaceful society. Everyone must come together to have a peaceful state. We can’t do it alone. I’ve spoken to stakeholders”, adding that “Any officer that goes against the law would be dismissed and charged to court”.
Also, DIG Adebanjo disclosed that the Federal Government had approved the recruitment of additional 10,000 officers this year and a total recruitment of 30,000 officers before the end of the year.
