Gunmen Kill Soldier, Injure Another In Ogun

A serving Nigerian Army soldier has been killed while another sustained injuries following an attack by armed men in the Mowe-Ibafo axis of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The  incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at a private dredging site in Magbon Etido, Mowe, where military personnel were reportedly deployed on security duty.

Initial reports had suggested that the attackers were suspected bandits, triggering concerns over possible criminal incursions in the area.

However, the Ogun Police Command later clarified that available findings did not establish the attack as a confirmed banditry operation.

The police said the incident was being treated as an isolated criminal attack pending further investigation.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Babaseyi, disclosed that one of the soldiers attached to security operations at the location lost his life during the attack, while another soldier who sustained injuries is currently receiving medical treatment.

According to him, security agencies have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and are working to identify those responsible.

Also speaking on the development, the Army Public Relations Officer of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta, Major Idereghi Samuel, confirmed that an incident involving military personnel had occurred.

He, however, noted that the military was still gathering comprehensive details relating to the attack and would provide further updates as investigations progress.

Meanwhile, security operatives, including police and military personnel, have reportedly launched coordinated operations across the area to track and apprehend the gunmen behind the assault.

As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been announced, while investigations remain ongoing.
