Dr Salis Muhammad Abdulsalam, founder of Displaced Women and Children in Nigeria, has urged the government to legislate against the almajiri system in the northern part of the country.
Speaking during the stakeholders’ town hall meeting, with the theme, Alternative Pathways for the Almajiri, A Collective Responsibility, Abdulsalam called on community leaders to take advantage of programme to promote the rights of their children.
The stakeholders meeting held at the Jos Central Mosque on Sunday. According to the host, the meeting is aimed at addressing the plight of the almajiri children roaming the streets of the 19 Northern states.

Held under the aegis of a group Movement for the Right of the Almajiri Child, MORAC, sponsored by Abdulsalami’s NGO, the meeting frowned at the ways and manner the deprived children were used by politician as thugs during the recent electioneering and called on the Fulani, Hausa and all Muslim communities in Plateau state to join forces to tackle problems associated with the Almajiri system .
Dr Salis explained further that some of “our middlemen use these under aged children and expose them to so many dangers that hardened them and make it hard for them to submit to parental control”
In his remark, Mallam Jamilu Hassan said the aged long practice can be abolished by giving the affected children modern education.
