Nigeria has expressed concern following the United States’ recent revision of its visa reciprocity schedule.
Under the new rules, the validity of non-immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens was reduced to just three months, with a single entry permitted.
In a statement, Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the development strains the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between the two countries.
“The decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations”, Ebienfa stated.
The restrictions affect various categories of visas, including B1/B2, F, and J, impacting Nigerian travellers, students, professionals, families, and individuals involved in cultural and educational exchanges.
Nigeria urged the US government to reconsider the decision, citing the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.
While diplomatic efforts are underway to resolve the issue, Ebienfa said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to pursuing a fair and mutually beneficial solution.
