The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu on Wednesday reversed Tuesday’s decision on school re-opening announced by the Minister of State for Education Mr Emeka Uwajiaba at the daily briefing by the Presidential Task Force in Abuja.
Speaking with State Correspondents in Abuja, after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday presided over by President Buhari, Malam Adamu said the Federal Government has insisted that students in Unity schools would not be participating in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) earlier scheduled to commence on August 4 and that all federal schools will not resume until such times control is gained against coronavirus.
He said West Africa Examination Council, Board was trying to stampede the government into re-opening schools by going ahead to announce the date it had fixed for the conduct of WASSCE, on Tuesday. The West African examination body had fixed August 4 to September 5 for its final exams, a development the Minister said was untenable. He said WAEC cannot determine the exam schedule for Nigeria and urged states not to reopen schools.
He said it was better to preserve the life of the students and that losing one academic year was not too much of a price to pay in the face of the deadly corona Virus pandemic.
