The Semi- final match between Manchester United and Coventry ended in in a 3-3 draw with United scrapping through after a penalty shoot out, with 4-2.
The win set up a Manchester derby in the FA Cup final for a second consecutive season.
For a match they led 2-0 at half time with a McTominay opener in the 23 minutes before Maguire header in 45+ and then a Bruno Fernandes strike in the 58th mins, Man U literally crumbled to the fire power of a determined Coventry whose Simms & O’Hare gave them hope with 71 and 79 mins strike until Wright leveled in injury time from penalty spot.
Had Coventry late winner not been ruled out, it would have been a sad affair for Man U who are struggling in the Premiership.
The outcome left Coventry fans and players in tears. They had produced a thrilling win in the quarter-finals against Wolves and they gave Manchester United an almighty scare at Wembley.
Conversely, there were no huge celebrations from Manchester United’s players or manager on the pitch. They knew they should never have let it go to penalties.
Hear Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, speaking to ITV1: “We found a way.
“We started the game really well and then conceded a sloppy goal. We were unfortunate to concede the second goal.
“I think the penalty was so hard but all credit to Coventry. They made it tough for us in the second half of extra time.
“It sums up our season, we had great control and played well for 60 minutes but then we conceded out of nothing.
“Then I don’t know, it seems like the world wanted Coventry to go on and do it. We showed great character to stick with it and it was important to win the shootout.”
Then, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to ITV1: “When they scored a goal [in extra time] we thought it might be offside, we couldn’t tell from the front.
“We put ourselves in a difficult position and should have killed it earlier but we didn’t. We have to do so much better.”
For former Manchester United midfielder on ITV1, Roy Keane said it was an embarrassment for his club.
He said, *The Manchester United players and supporters weren’t going over the top because they were lucky to win. They were almost embarrassed in the end.
I don’t like what I see when I watch this United group. I don’t see leaders.
They give up chances, they give up goals, we’ve seen it all season and they rode their luck today *
Clinton Morrison, former Coventry City striker on BBC Radio 5 Live, predicts the final, thus,
*If Man Utd play like that against Man City they will get beaten by six or seven.
Coventry have been fantastic. Man Utd’s penalties were outstanding and Andre Onana made a big save – credit to Coventry.
They got away with it and that is why the celebrations are not going to be wild. Man Utd have done the job and they now play Man City.*
Coventry City boss Mark Robins to ITV:
“We conceded too many poor goals. We knew we had to make changes which we did at half-time. We spoke about not having regrets. We started to look more of a threat.
“To come back from 3-0 down is incredible. Some good quality football. We were really disappointed at the end.
“We hit the bar and had a goal disallowed. It was a really difficult game. We lose Tavares to injury and had to make another change.
“If you can attack them you can really hurt them. I can’t be prouder of them. They did fantastically well. I think we’ve made Coventry proud.
“You get to penalties and it’s a lottery. You don’t hold anything against anyone if they show the courage to take one in a cauldron.”
Manchester City’s secured a 1-0 FA Cup semi-final victory against Chelsea. They meet local rival Man U on May 25.
