Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has passed away at the age of 72.
Family sources confirmed that Okupe, who also served as the Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign team in 2023, died on Friday.
While details surrounding his death remain unclear, sources close to the family revealed that he had been battling health issues.
In October 2023, Okupe was reportedly flown to Israel for treatment after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. However, it was gathered that his condition did not improve as he and his family had hoped.
Born in Iperu, Ogun State, Okupe was the son of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe. He attended St. Jude’s School in Lagos and Igbobi College before proceeding to study medicine at the University of Ibadan.
His political career saw him serve as the spokesperson for the National Republican Convention before being appointed as a media aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He later became a senior adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan.
In 2022, Okupe briefly emerged as the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party before stepping down. He later assumed the role of Director-General for the party’s presidential campaign.
However, in January 2024, he announced his departure from the Labour Party, citing ideological differences. He described the party as a temporary platform he had used for the 2023 elections after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.
Okupe was married to Aduralere Okupe and was survived by several children, including Ditan and Bolu.
