The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, on yesterday urged the Federal Government to prosecute 37police officers indicted for human rights violations by a Presidential Panel on the Reform of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.
Making this request yesterday in Abuja was the Mr Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, when he submitted the panel’s report to the Malam Abubakar Malaim, SAN, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, for implementation.
He also said the report contained the names of 37 SARS operatives.
According to Ojukwu, the Commission’s report contains testimonies of Nigerians from the six geo-political zones in the country where it heard complaints on the SARS atrocities. He urged Malami to expedite action on the findings.
He said “the complaints by Nigerians against the then SARS are all were encapsulated in the report and we expect the prosecution in accordance with the law.”
Responding, Malami said that the government would implement the report in such a way that justice will be served to all the parties concerned, adding that the government has a mandate to, “establish a constitutional order where the welfare and also peaceful co-existence of citizens are prioritised against personal or group interest.”
