The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mustapha Isah has urged spokespersons of presidential candidates to be civil in their statements and press releases ahead of the upcoming 2023 general election.
Isah said this on Sunday in his brief address of welcome when the Guild hosted Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as guest to its forum.
According to Isah, “The Guild wants issue-based campaigns and has designed the forum to provide a platform for presidential candidates to tell Nigerians their plans to enable the voters make informed decisions on the 2023 polls. But we have a situation in which aides to presidential candidates issue press releases that are not issue based.”
He appealed to “colleagues to refrain from using the press releases”, adding that, “may be the aides will have to sign a peace accord after their principals.”
The interactive forum with presidential candidates, Isah maintained, will give editors drawn from the print, electronic and online media and the candidates the opportunity to engage in robust dialogue about developmental issues that affect the citizenry and the country.
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was the first to appear before the forum on Wednesday, November 16, followed by Kwankwaso on Sunday, November 20, while the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi is expected to take his turn on Monday, November 21.
