Ecuador produced a stunning comeback to defeat Germany 2-1 and secure qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in dramatic fashion.
The South Americans endured a nightmare start after Germany struck just two minutes into the contest. Leroy Sané capitalised early to hand the four-time world champions the lead, putting Ecuador’s hopes of progressing under immediate threat.
Needing nothing less than victory to stay alive in the competition, Ecuador responded with determination.
Their persistence paid off in the ninth minute when Nilson Angulo unleashed a superb long-range effort that beat Manuel Neuer to restore parity.
Despite Germany enjoying 61 percent possession, Ecuador remained disciplined and created the more dangerous chances.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute. A flicked header from Rodríguez found Gonzalo Plata inside the area, and the forward calmly poked the ball beyond Neuer to complete Ecuador’s remarkable turnaround.
The victory was especially significant as Ecuador had failed to score in their opening two group matches before finding the net twice against the Group E leaders.
Germany’s defeat did little damage to their campaign, as victories in their opening two fixtures ensured they still finished top of the group.
Ivory Coast claimed second place on head-to-head record, while Ecuador ended third and advanced as one of the best third-placed teams, with a potential Round of 32 meeting against England.
Midfielder Pedro Vite delivered one of the tournament’s standout individual performances, making nine tackles—the most by an Ecuadorian player in a World Cup match since records began in 1966 and joint-most by any player at this year’s tournament.
