Vice Chancellor of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Professor Abdulrahman Asipita has urged Nigerians to emulate late Engr Joseph Oyeyani Makoju’s Legacies in Energy and Manufacturing sectors.
Professor Asipita made the call at the 3rd Memorial Lecture he delivered in honour of the deceased industry ICON, Engr Dr. Joseph Oyeyani Makoju, put in place by the Federal University, Lokoja over the weekend.
Professor Asipita in his lecture, titled, Joseph Oyeyani Makoju: Archetype of Adaptive Energy Transition and Cement Manufacturing” described the footprint of late distinguished son of Kogi state as laudable and worthy of emulation.
He said that late Engr Joseph Makoju was able to revolutionize cement manufacturing which brought in operational efficiency and expansion capacity in the cement industry.
“Throughout his career, he exemplified professionalism, diligence, and ethical leadership. These qualities should guide our approach to governance, industry, and academia. His ability to navigate complex challenges and drive transformative change is a model for leaders in all sectors.
“Engr Makoju’s ability to foresee industry trends and adapt accordingly was a major factor in his success. He recognized the role of technology in enhancing efficiency and promoting sustainability. We must continue to foster innovation to drive economic growth.
“His commitment to responsible industrial growth is a guiding principle for our efforts to build a sustainable future. As climate change and environmental concerns take centre stage, we are responsible for implementing sustainable practices in all sectors, particularly in energy and manufacturing.
“Investing in human capital development is crucial for sustaining national progress. We must actively nurture the next generation of engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders.
“He emphasized the importance of developing local engineering capabilities, a crucial factor in driving sustainable development
“His dedication to developing local talents and ensuring those talents were included in national infrastructure projects is an example that Nigeria must follow”
In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, said that the memorial lecture was instituted by the University as its modest way of honouring the immense contributions and impactful life of late Engr. Dr. Joseph Makoju.
” He was a colossus in the energy and manufacturing sectors, a nation builder, and above all, a man who gave selflessly for the growth of education and the betterment of humanity.
“At the 2 Memorial Lecture, the Makoju family announced a very generous donation of a lecture theatre to the University in honour of their beloved patriarch. To the glory of God, I am pleased to announce that the lecture theatre has been completed and commissioned
“Let me state here with all sincerity that the only way we, as a University, could reciprocate the rare and generous gestures of the late Engr. Joseph Makoju is by instituting this annual memorial lecture. This lecture is not just a tribute to his memory, but a platform to sustain the ideals and values he lived for—excellence, innovation, and nation building.
“The Makoju family has remained a dependable pillar of support to our University, and we cannot thank them enough.
“Today’s lecture, titled “Archetype of Adaptive Energy Transition and Cement Manufacturing,” is indeed most timely and relevant, especially as Nigeria and other developing nations seek sustainable ways to transition to cleaner energy sources without compromising industrial growth.
“As we proceed with the programme, I invite all of us to reflect on the life and legacy of the late Engr. Dr. Makoju. May his memory continue to inspire us to live lives of purpose, integrity, and impact”
