Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, the Presidency announced late Monday.
According to the statement, Badaru tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1, citing health reasons.
President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for the minister’s service.
A nomination to fill the vacancy is expected to be forwarded to the Senate later this week.
Badaru, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His departure comes as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency, with further details expected soon, according to his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga
