The conclave to elect the 267th Pope will commence on May 7, following the conclusion of the Novemdiales Masses held for the eternal repose of the late Pope Francis, the Vatican announced on Monday.
Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, April 21. The 266th Pontiff was laid to rest on Saturday, April 26, after a funeral Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.
According to reports, the date for the election of a new pope was set on Monday morning during the fifth General Congregation attended by 180 cardinals at the Vatican.
To validly elect a new pope, a two-thirds majority of the electors present is required.
“All election procedures will take place exclusively in the Sistine Chapel within the Vatican Apostolic Palace, which remains completely sealed off until the election is concluded,” the Vatican said.
