The Central Bank of Nigeria has denied reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the re-issuance and release of old N500 and N1000 notes, as leger tender in the country, describing the news as false.
According to the Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, Edward Adamu and Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, the CBN “reiterates that in line with the directive of President ((Muhammadu Buhari), only N200 old notes are to be re-issued and to circulate concurrently with the new notes. Members of the public are thereby advised to ignore this fake news.”
They said the apex bank is working with “security agencies to investigate, arrest and prosecute the purveyors of this fake news.”
