The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Northern Chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam, has challenged Muslims and Christians in the country to eschew what he called the ‘politics of religion’ and embrace the teachings of their as they relate to peaceful co-existence in the country.
Rev. Pam made this disclosure while presenting a paper titled, “Struggle for Identify in Nigeria: Abrahamic Faith’s, Ethnicity and Ethical Conflicts in Perspective”, at the second national summit on peaceful co-existence and nation building, held in Jos, the Plateau state capital.
According to him, “We want people in the grassroots and at home to know that in a meeting of religious leaders from different religions the agreement should be to live in peace in the country and not calling for war.”
Pam maintained that, “Enough of the blood shed, enough of the killings, enough of the destruction of properties and enough of exchanging of unhealthy words in the media”
He stressed that “This time around, we must stop the circles of killings, we must stop the circle of hatred otherwise our children unborn will not forgive us”.
We want people to hear that like the Sultan said yesterday, that we are calling for peace and we should mark our calling for peace with action.
“We want religious leaders to talk to their followers that we are calling for peace, Nigeria is a country we are proud of, we have no any other country but this one and most of the things that are happening are stage managed to make sure that there is crisis.”
He called on Nigerians to harness their ethnic and religious differences to build the country rather than allowing some ambitious individuals to take advantage of it to destroy the country.
Noting that Nigeria needs credible leaders who have the capacity to unite the country for development and growth, he urged various ethnic groups in the country not to allow ambitious politicians take advantage to divide the people for their selfish interests.
