The tension brewing between Labour Party, LP, and the ‘Obidient’ support groups regarding delays in campaign funding and mobilization, is precipitating violence, which could erupt any moment soon, if not managed carefully and urgently too.
As a support group, Movement for Change Worldwide (MFCW) believes strongly, that with urgent intervention, a normalization of the frail relationship is possible.
The Labour Party lackadaisical approach in handling the party’s campaign efforts and mobilization of support groups, is devoid of motivation and quite demoralizing, to say the least, because their inaction has incapacitated the support groups and kept them idle just at the point, when the campaign is supposedly, becoming heated up.
The party’s intent to take control of the support groups by disbanding the Coalition for Peter Obi, CPO, and bringing such powerful and influential groups under the management of a largely, inexperienced Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, executives and State Chairmen of Labour Party, many of whose loyalty is questionable, had contributed immensely, to the dwindling interest and break-away of some support groups that believe the party lacks the capacity to effectively execute the campaigns alone.
Urgent measures have to be taken to salvage the widening relationship between the party and the support groups. Firstly, the party should allow the support groups retain some level of independence by recognizing the coalitions. Secondly, the party should relate with the coalitions and not the individual support groups.
Lastly, it should urgently release campaign materials and fund the support groups independently, so as to enable them to commence the campaign and carry out rigorous door-to-door sensitization.
