Brighton and Hove Albion completed an extraordinary second-half comeback to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in their Sunday thriller of a match. The match saw Spurs surrender a two-goal lead in what became a defining moment of their season.
Tottenham dominated the first half, with Brennan Johnson opening the scoring after 23 minutes, followed by James Maddison doubling their advantage before the interval. The visitors’ high-pressing strategy and clinical finishing suggested they were on course for their sixth consecutive victory.
But the determined home side soon turned the tide and made the now confident visitors see red in the second half as Brighton manager, Fabian Hurzeler’s tactical adjustments made a huge difference to the one sided game.
Yankuba Minteh initiated the comeback, followed by Georginio Rutter equalising near the hour mark. Former Arsenal forward, Danny Welbeck, sealed the victory with a precise header in the 66th minute.
The result represented a significant setback for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, whose team’s defensive frailties were exposed, particularly through left-back Destiny Udogie’s involvement in all three Brighton goals.
The victory demonstrated Brighton’s resilience under their young manager Hurzeler, while raising questions about Tottenham’s ability to maintain consistency throughout the full duration of matches, particularly following their midweek European commitments.
