In a major political development, Senator Seriake Dickson, the lawmaker representing Bayelsa West in the Nigerian Senate, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, made the announcement on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja.
He described himself as “a man of conviction,” noting that the PDP is currently in a state akin to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and that Nigeria cannot operate as a one-party state.
The senator, who currently serves on the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, said his defection marks a significant political shift in Bayelsa State.
His move follows Governor Douye Diri’s recent defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that has unsettled opposition structures and altered the state’s political dynamics.
Political analysts believe Dickson’s exit from the PDP could reshape alliances in Bayelsa West and influence the evolving political landscape ahead of future elections.
The NDC is one of two newly registered political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) earlier this year.
The party aims to establish a stronger presence in Nigeria’s competitive political environment.
