Gunmen on Wednesday morning invaded Government Secondary School in Iluke, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing three persons including the Vice Principal, Mr Gani Anifowose.
The bandits attacked the school at about 9 am when students were writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The attackers invaded the community and disrupted the examination, attempting to abduct students in the process.
During the attack, Vice Principal Gani Anifowose and two other persons were killed.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of three residents of Iluke Community in Bunu District of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area following an attack by suspected bandits disguised in military uniforms.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government described the incident as a tragic act of terrorism and extended condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Iluke Community and the entire Bunu District.
The government commended the swift intervention of military personnel and local security operatives whose bravery prevented what could have been a large-scale abduction.
Reports available to the government indicated that the bandits had already begun forcing students into the bush when security forces engaged them in a fierce gun battle.
“The superior firepower, professionalism and courage of the security agents ensured that all the students were rescued unharmed and returned safely,” the statement said.
The government disclosed that one of the attackers was neutralised during the operation, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying efforts to bring all those involved in the attack to justice.
Fanwo praised the military, local vigilantes, hunters and other security personnel for their sacrifice and patriotism, noting that their actions saved innocent lives and averted a potentially devastating mass kidnapping.
The state government assured residents that it is closely monitoring developments in the area and working with security agencies to strengthen security around the affected community, adding that additional measures would be announced to further protect lives and property.
Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing security operations.
The government reiterated its resolve to confront criminality, declaring that Kogi State would not bow to terror.
“Criminal elements seeking to undermine the peace and security of our state will continue to meet a determined, coordinated and uncompromising response from security agencies and the government,” the statement stressed.
The government also reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Iluke Community and pledged continued support as security agencies work to restore normalcy and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
