The Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors of all federal universities to enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) participating in the ongoing strike.
A circular dated Monday, October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, instructed university authorities to compile the names of lecturers who have withdrawn their services and ensure that their salaries are withheld for the duration of the strike.
According to the circular, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has been mandated to monitor compliance and submit a comprehensive report within seven days.
The government, however, clarified that the directive does not apply to members of other academic unions such as the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), who are not participating in the strike.
ASUU, on Sunday, declared a two-week warning strike after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government over the failure to implement agreements on improved welfare, university funding, and payment of withheld salaries.
The Federal Government reaffirmed that it remains open to dialogue but insisted that the “No Work, No Pay” policy will be strictly implemented in line with civil service rules.
